CHAPTER 64

Gophna Hills

Abihu, one of the runners who had been sent out a week ago, returned. He was not alone, bringing with him at least twenty other men.

The Hasmonean brothers stood in front of the gathered men, eager to hear news of the outside world. Marius stood slightly behind Judah, watching the new men approach. One could feel the apprehension, the pressure the men seemed to feel. What news will Abihu bring them?

Judah stepped toward the runner, greeting him like an old friend. Now that Israel lay divided, men who fought for the same cause became brothers quickly. Everyone on their team was chained together by a special bond.

“We see you have brought fresh blood. What news have you for us?” Judah tried to keep his voice calm, yet everyone felt the anxiousness.

“These men are from Tappuah, Lebonah, Shiloh, and Gilgal. There are more people behind us. Women and children with men to protect them.” Abihu paused for a moment, scratching the side of his head.

Abihu was a young lad, not much older than Marius—with dark, thick curls, matching the color of his melancholy eyes. His lean, muscular body stood, drooping with tiredness in front of the large group, but Abihu carried a smile on his thin lips.

“We left before the army came to these villages. I had spread the word to them about what had happened in Modein, and within a few days, the respective elders of each community had gotten word to the faithful. People gathered what few things they had and pulled out with their wagons and carts. These men are willing to fight by your side, Judah.”

A roar of approval came from behind Judah, and he smiled, turning back to look at his men. His spirits were lifted by their cheering. Knowing the numbers grew steadily each day filled his heart with hope. He caught Marius’ eye and nodded in silent understanding.

It wasn’t until late in the evening that Judah and Marius found themselves together by the campfire, absorbed by the daily events. Details of attacks filled their thoughts and conversations. Antiochus and the Syrian army consumed them. Judah found Marius staring into the flames, lost in the blazing tongues of fire. They sat in silence for a while until Judah broke the stillness.

“It’s good to find a quiet moment. I can picture David in front of me. In moments like these, I can imagine what he must have felt. I just hope we don’t have to hide seven years like he did.” Judah let out a deep sigh. “Did you know that David and his men were hiding at a place not too far from us? He was hiding in Gilgal. He had to hide in many different places over the years. He also hid in the caves of Adullam—this spot reminds me so much of those caves. David wrote about that time. He referred to his enemies as lions, who were waiting for him like ravenous beasts. He was surrounded by spears and arrows, yet David lifted his eyes to the heavens to trust Hashem.
